Artist Statement
As a Palestinian-American woman, I strive to represent the beautifully rich culture of my people, which is often misunderstood, through my artwork. I work primarily with oil on canvas, using this medium to display brilliant jewel tones and colors found in the natural world. I gravitate towards subject matter from the natural world and am inspired by fruits, plants, and food that hold significant cultural value to me.
As an artist, my goal is to bring awareness to the world and represent my innermost struggles in a way that people can connect to, no matter their background. I seek to represent the cultural disconnect that many children of immigrants, from all backgrounds and ethnicities, feel, along with the persistent pride and concurrent sadness we often encounter when thinking of our heritage. I aim to represent my childhood experiences and cultural traditions through symbolism, as a way to reconnect to my culture in a way many struggle to. I strive to showcase the best parts of my heritage while working to bring awareness to the negativity shown by our world and society. My work is a way for me to feel connected to my culture in a way that allows others to see the beautiful diversity of the Palestinian People.
